How do I clean my dog's ears?
Hi, my name is Clara and I'm a veterinary technician here at Rogers Pet Clinic. Today I'm going to show you how to properly clean your dog's ears. It's best if you have a patient who sits still, so this might be a two-man job at home.
What I do is I make an L shape with my hand so I can get a good hold on the back of the ear and keep it open using my thumb.
From there, you'll take whatever ear cleaner you have, whether it's from your vet or over-the-counter, and you'll squirt probably like a quarter-size amount into the ear canal.
From there, you take your other hand and you're just going to massage at the base of where the ear is open. You'll hear a slight swooshing sound, so you know you're in the right space, and you'll just work out any debris.
What do you recommend using to clean my dog's ears?
We recommend using gauze or flattened-out cotton balls. We never want to stick q-tips in the ear because we don't want to hit the eardrum.
With your gauze, you'll then just take your pointer finger and rub the inside out. Thankfully, my patient's ears are pretty clean. Once I've gotten the majority of the debris out and any other excess cleaner, I'll let go and she will let me shake.
And that is how you clean your dog's ears!
